Important Notice From The Con Chair!
Vericon Fans,

Registration for Vericon 12, March 16-18 2012, is now open! Our pre-registration discount will be available for the next two weeks. Early registrants can also sign up to participate in events as they are added to the schedule, and can add events of their own. Regular registration will remain open until March 5.

Register at http://www.vericon.org/cgi-bin/registration/reg_submit.cgi. While you're on the site, be sure to check out our speakers page at http://www.vericon.org/speakers.html. We've got a great set of guests again this year, including Lev Grossman, Thomas Sniegoski, Greer Gilman, R.L. Stine, and Guest of Honor Vernor Vinge. The Webcomics panel also returns this year, and will feature, among others, artist Christopher Hastings, of Doctor McNinja fame, and Michael "Mookie" Terracciano, of Dominic Deegan: Oracle For Hire.

Be sure to check in on our Schedule page over the next month as well; a number of great RPGs and LARPs are being run this year, and will be listed soon, and you'll want to keep an eye out for a few new panels we're trying out this time around.

Finally, I'm sorry to say that the Art Show is taking a hiatus for this year. In its place, however, we're putting all of our energy into a new event which we hope will develop into a strong tradition: the Vericon Charity Auction. This year's theme is "Doctors Without [Spatiotemporal] Borders", and there will be more information on the website about it soon.

Hope to see you all at the con!

Pandemonium Fund Raising Pot Luck March 29th : Please Come & Help Out!
Pandemonium Books, our local Sf/Fantasy/Horror Books & Gaming Store
here in Cambridge (Pleasant St in Central Square) is facing some harsh
financial situations thanks to the slowing economy, accumulated debt thanks to
rising interest rates, and some operating overhead that wasn't expected
because of some companies they were dealing with merging with others and
then raising their rates.

Anyway, the store needs to raise money to deal with the State Revenue
Department, which is being less than sympathetic to small business needs
(which is why they seized Tosci's Ice Cream temporarily last month and closed
the doors).

What can you do?

1) Go Buy Stuff in store now instead of later. Don't put off purchases that you
want to make. Additionally Tyler will be taking pre-orders of the D&D 4th
Edition materials.

2) Go Get a Gift Certificate for yourself or someone you know (and don't spend
it for a few months). This basically moves debt from debt that has interest on it
to debt that is interest free. If the store can shift enough of it's debt it can
Consolidate the debt in a single bank loan with a fixed interest rate and things
will get better. Recommended is a certificate for anywhere from $25 on up.

3) On Saturday March 29th we, the friends and fans of the store and the
community around it, are having a Pot Luck Fundraiser in the evening from
7-11. Basically this is a party for folks to meet and greet, play some board &
card games, share food and throw some money into the kitty directly. We have
the store's downstairs facilities to ourselves for this gathering.

The rules for the Potluck is everyone throws $10 minimum into the 'Save
Pandemonium Fund' (more would be better) and brings a food item to share.

I'll be doing the logistics for this (folks who know me from my running of the
Vericon Con Suite in 2006 and 2007 know that this sort of thing is what I do
best). I'll have all the usual supplies to eat and serve with, and will be set up for
hot drinks. The store has soda stocked up stairs.

If you want to bring (or buy and use) a game at the gathering all the better, but
we'll have a big pile of games for folks that want to game.

We'll also be brainstorming on how we can get Pandemonium into a financial
stable situation, how to bring in new customers, and ways to make the store
more customer friendly.

The event will run from 7-11 on March 29th, and you can drop in anytime from
7-10 (the store officially closes at 10, but we'll be able to use the space until 11
as is usual for gaming events in the store as well. There's no requirement that
you stay the entire time, but we'd be glad to have you involved.

For those who haven't been to the store, it's at 4 Pleasant Street in Cambridge,
in Central Square off of Mass Ave. Look for the 7-11 and the Post Office,
Pleasant Street starts between them and Pandy is right behind the 7-11 Store.

James Ernst
I had the pleasure of seeing James Ernst (of Cheapass Games) again last weekend at Archon. While talking with him, I mentioned that we'd met at Vericon 01. He remarked that he still considers Vericon to be one of the best conventions that he's attended, and certainly was the best live action Devil Bunny he's ever seen. I just thought folks would like to know. :)

Folks

The July 17th post regarding the announcement by Jason, the con-chair for Vericon, in this community has produce a large amount of discussion within the comments section of that post (53 as a few minutes ago).

If you were involved in this thread early on, you might want to go back and see what Jason has said in response to the feedback you have given him.

I'm just the community maintainer here, food coordinator for the convention in '05 and '06 for the consuite/green room, and occasionally the 'messenger' who passes along information.

Because threading becomes complex here on LJ when comments get numerous, I would suggest that folks who have new responses to the announcement might want to make additional posts and comments outside of the ongoing extension of the 17th's post to ensure that is seen and read. Additionally after a few days folks often fail to follow any one specific message's threading (and LJ has a nasty tendency to forget to send out notifications of comments randomly). This will help what you have to say be more likely to be seen and responded to.

I'd also ask that folks try to stay somewhere near on topic of Vericon Guests, Policies, Planning, Problems etc. and not onto tangents that are rather far or completely off topic. (I think this is the only time I've ever had to ask that of folks as moderator, and the last couple of days is the most traffic this community has seen since it was created).

Namaste.

Pandemonium Books - Latest News!

I just got the official word from pandemonium_bks the IRS has now been officially paid off. This is good news for everyone, and there is much thanks to everyone who helped out.... BUT

Only about half of the folks who ordered shirts have actually paid for them, which means that they have had to ignore other creditors for the last week or so to raise the funds to pay the IRS. This has made the other creditors bitter and resentful.

If you have ordered a shirt, please send payment along somehow, whether by check, PayPal, or swinging by the store to pay in person. If you have any questions, please give Tyler a call at 617-547-3721. They have a complete list of the preorders if you don’t quite remember what you got.

Please Honor your Commitments!

Many Thanks

I wanted to offer many thanks to all the convention Volunteers (Official and unofficial) who helped us out in making the consuite at Vericon 007 work out so well. I couldn't have done it without your helpful hands, cleaning efforts and willingness to fulfill my requests in regards to what needed to be done.

We made this year's consuite the best consuite to date for Vericon and kept as many people happy, fed, and feeling welcome as was possible.

And that is what a good consuite is all about.

Convention Note

selkiechick : Just to let you know I took your cooler/ice chest home with us today since it looked like you didn't get a chance to attend the convention this weekend, to ensure it would get back to you. We can figure out how to connect up about it when my back is in a slightly less fragile state.

IMPORTANT REMINDER!!!!
<>< VERICON! ><>

It's Time! Tomorrow Night Vericon 2007 Begins at 5:00 PM!!!!

Most of the information in this mail is also available on our website, at
http://www.vericon.org

You can also find a list of guests and the ever-evolving schedule.

The URL for the page with all area maps and places to stay and park is

<>< WHEN AND WHERE IS THIS CON OF WHICH YOU SPEAK? ><>

The Con is from Friday, January 26, through Sunday, January 28.
Registration opens at 5 PM on Friday in the main entranceway of Sever,
and the con ends at 3 PM on Sunday. I urge you to check in as soon as
possible, so you can pick up your con booklet and your name tag and
begin attending events, and say hi to the nice people who made all
this possible.

Vericon is located in Sever Hall in Harvard Yard, and before you go
anywhere else you MUST go to the main entranceway of Sever and check
in at registration, and pay if you have not yet paid!

For driving directions to Harvard, search for "1350 Massachusetts Ave,
Cambridge, MA" at http://www.maps.google.com.

If you're taking the subway, Harvard Square is located on the Red Line.
Fare will be $2.00, travelling from almost anywhere. Harvard Yard is the
area bordered by Massachusetts Avenue, which takes a right-angled turn
through the Square.

For a map of Harvard Yard, follow this link:
http://www.map.harvard.edu/level2.cfm?mapname=camb_allston&tile=F7

Sever is quite easy to recognise, being a large red building with a key-hole
shaped entrance that looks like it ought to have bats roosting in the windows.
It is at right angles to Widener Library, which can be recognised by the
columns and the many steps. Registration will be directly inside. More
information will be available at registration and at the information desk.

<>< CRASH SPACE ><>

If you requested crash space, you will have received a separate confirmation
email with contact information for your host. When you check in at the con,
we'll ask you to confirm that you still need the space. If you have
not already told your host when you are arriving, you should do so as
soon as you can. Otherwise, try
to make yourself findable by your host during the con itself. If you're
having trouble finding your host or any questions about housing during the
con, registration will be happy to help.

Unfortunately, we are no longer able to provide common space where congoers can
sleep. If you do not yet have a place to sleep during the con, please make sure
either to arrange for crash space with someone local, or to stay in a hotel.

If you're looking for a hotel room, a few of the nearer, cheaper local hotels

Vericon Pre-registration Closing Soon! (Con Chair Announcement)
Folks:

We'll still accept registrations at the door, but online registration

And finally, we're still looking volunteers to help out during the Con.
Volunteering is a fun way to see what goes on behind on the scenes,

Vericon Needs Your Stuff!

Ok, efforts have continued on my part to acquire needed supplies for Vericon's Consuite. We now have toasters for the toasting of bread like stuff but are still in need of :

  • Large Ice Chest : I've hit every Hardware, Housewares and Supply Store in our area and found none. Anyone have one they can loan us to store Ice in?
  • Hand Vaccuum : A Dust Devil or similar quick picker upper. Last year the floor/carpet became a disaster by Sunday. Anyone Got one we can borrow?

We also need volunteers, as does all of the convention. Vericon needs more folks to run games and other nifty things at the convention. We also need folks to help fetch, tote, clean, organize, etc.

Checkout the website if you're interested in volunteering some time.
